How to Become a Bounty Hunter in Oklahoma

Oklahoma allows bail bondsmen, employees of bondsmen, and peace officers to act as bail enforcement agents in the state. Since bounty hunters are often employees of bondsmen, bounty hunters are allowed to act as fugitive recovery agents in the state. Current guidelines require persons performing bail enforcement duties to procure a certified copy of the bail bond and deliver it along with the defendant to a sheriff in the arresting county.

Bounty Hunter Education

You must receive training to act as a bail enforcement agent either as a bail bondsman, peace officer or employee of a licensed bail bondsman. Graduating with a college degree in criminal justice, public administration or sociology is highly recommended as it will give you a greater chance of success pursuing any of the training and certification required to become a bounty hunter in Oklahoma.

To become a bail bondsman you must meet certain state guidelines. You must be at least 21 years old, have good moral character, have a clean record free of any felonies or misdemeanors, be a citizen of the United States, have knowledge or experience in the bail bond business and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Requirements to become a peace officer in Oklahoma are regulated by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET). In order to be a peace officer you must be at least 21 years old, be a United States citizen or a resident legal alien and possess a high school diploma or the equivalent. In addition to these stipulations, you cannot have any state or federal felony convictions.

In order to work as a peace officer in Oklahoma, you must be in good mental and physical health. You must agree to undergo a fingerprinting clearance from both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and undergo a psychological examination by an employee of CLEET. You cannot have been involuntarily committed to an Oklahoma State mental institution. The state will certify that you are physically able to participate in the CLEET Basic Peace Officer Certification Academy.

Bounty Hunter Certification

Oklahoma does not currently have any specific regulations concerning bounty hunting, however, this may soon change. A bill to introduce bounty hunting certification under CLEET is now pending. The bill, introduced by Sen. Ralph Shortey, R-Oklahoma City, would require bounty hunters to become licensed under CLEET regulations.

Bail Bondsman Certification

Certification requirements to become a licensed as a bail bondsman do exist. The requirements include complying with all the education requirements mentioned above along with a submission of an application and licensing fee of $250.00. Licensing must also be renewed annually.

Peace Officer Certification

Requirements to become a licensed peace officer entail meeting all of the previously mentioned requirements including training in a CLEET-approved program, submission of an application, and passing an examination within 6 months of training.
